PHS SCHOOL VISION: Empowering Students to Become Productive Members of a Global Community
PHS SCHOOL MISSION: Modeling and Developing Intellectual, Physical and Emotional Behaviors that Lead to Success for All
KEY ACTIONS:
·         Increase the Graduation Rate
·         Increase rigor and student engagement (Project-based learning environment)
·         Increase community and parental involvement

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Mathematics in Industry and Government (MIG) is rooted in Operations Research and is an excel-driven course.  “Operations research (OR) is a scientific way to analyze problems and make decisions.  OR professionals try to provide a sound basis for decision-making.  They attempt to understand and structure complex situations.  They use this understanding to predict how the system will behave.  Then they try to improve performance.  Often OR professionals use numerical and algebraic techniques.  They develop mathematical and computer models of a system of people, machines, and procedures.  Then they manipulate the models to study the behavior of the system.” (from Intro 2010 North Carolina State University: MINDSET)  This course was created through the efforts of the MINDSET Project.  Mathematics Instruction using Decision Science and Engineering Tools (MINDSET) is a collaborative project between educators, engineers, and mathematicians at three universities to create, implement, and evaluate a new mathematics curriculum and textbook.

Performance in mathematics is a critical factor affecting students’ success in the areas of sciences and engineering trades and Georgia now requires a fourth year of high school mathematics.  The MINDSET curriculum uses math-based decision making tools from Operations Research to present standard mathematics concepts in a non-calculus fourth-year mathematics course.  The overall goals of the MINDSET project are to enhance students’ mathematical knowledge and skills with regard to their ability to formulate and solve multi-step problems and interpret results and to improve students’ attitude toward mathematics thereby motivating them to study mathematics.

SYNERGY ACCESS TO GRADES:

It is strongly encouraged that you keep your Synergy login information in a safe place and that you have access to the information when needed.  Parents should contact the Main Office (770.819.2521) or Mr. John Chandler at ext. 099 in order to obtain their synergy password and access information.

Please note that when you are viewing grades in Synergy that a blank grade column for your child has no effect on their grade.  If the space is blank, then your student may not have turned in that assignment due to absence or the teacher may not have entered grades for that assignment at that time.  An “X” means that the student is exempt from an assignment at the discretion of the teacher.

TEXTBOOK/SUPPLEMENTAL RESOURCES:

Math of Industry and Government Course
                                Student Edition Revised 06/2012

GENERAL INFORMATION:

EXTRA CREDIT AND RETEST POLICY:   Individual extra credit assignments are not given.  Students will be given an opportunity to retest for mastery on each standard.  Retest opportunities will only be given after a student completes remediation on a standard. Examples of remediation include completing extra assigned problems and attending at least one tutoring session with the teacher. Extra Credit WILL NOT be given to replace any existing grades.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Composition Notebook
Pencil

DONATION REQUEST:

Hand Sanitizer
Kleenex
Paper Towels

CLASS EXPECTATIONS:
1.      BE READY – be prompt, prepared, and participate in ALL class activities
2.      BE RESPECTFUL – of yourself, others and their property
3.      BE RESPONSIBLE – for all assignments, materials and your behavior

FINAL EXAM EXEMPTION:
Students with no more than one excused absence may qualify to exempt one of their final exams.  Students with a course average of 80 or higher may exempt one final exam of their choice.  Students with a course average of 79 or below may request that ten percentage points be added to the final exam grade.  Towards the end of the semester, students who qualify may submit an Exam Exemption Form to the classroom teacher of their choice.  Teachers must verify that the student qualifies for the exemption.

PARTICIPATION:

Class participation is an important component of the curriculum. Much can be learned from the exchange of ideas that occurs during group discussion. Frequent absences SERIOUSLY jeopardize your success in this class.

ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP POLICY:

Students will receive one more day than the total amount of days absent to make up any missed work, provided that the absence is excused. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements to make up any assessments. Information about what is happening in the classroom can be found by visiting Miss Keller’s blog at http://misskellermig.blogspot.com

TARDY POLICY:

To avoid being counted tardy, students must be seated and ready for class when the bell rings.  School policy states that students may receive Saturday School, In-School Suspension, and Out-of-School Suspension for repeated tardies.

EXTRA HELP:

Morning Session  - Any morning, by appointment

Afternoon Session – Tuesday, Thursday 3:30 to 4:15

If you are in PA, please notify Miss Keller if you will be attending tutoring after 5th period

CELL PHONES AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES:

As per the school’s policy, cell phones are not to be used during class time unless directed by the teacher for instructional purposes. Students will receive a discipline referral after one warning to put away any electronic device (unless the device is being used for instruction). Students are allowed to bring certain technologies to class (iPad, laptop, Kindle, etc.), but it should NOT interfere with the teaching or other’s learning.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

Cheating is considered a serious matter.  Any student who is involved in cheating/plagiarism will receive a grade of zero on the material, an unsatisfactory in conduct, and his/her parents will be notified.

For this course, cheating is defined as, but is not limited to, the following acts:

  • Copying anyone's answers to questions, exercises, study guides, class work or homework assignments
  • Taking any information verbatim from any source, including the Internet, without giving proper credit to the author, or rearranging the order of words and/or changing some words as written by the author and claiming the work as his or her own, i.e., plagiarism.
  • Looking onto another student's paper during a test or quiz.
  • Having available any study notes or other test aids during a test or quiz without the teacher's permission.
  • Collaborating on assignments when independent work is expected.
Final Thoughts:
I look forward to this semester and want to do all I can to help you meet your goal of graduation.
